2-euro Commemorative Coins 2007
In 2007, the 2-euro commemorative coins took a historic leap forward with the first common issue throughout the eurozone. This event not only reinforced the symbolic value of these coins, but also marked a key moment of union and collective memory in Europe.
2007: First common commemorative issue and expansion of the eurozone
The year 2007 will go down in European numismatic history as the first year in which all eurozone countries issued a joint commemorative coin, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, one of the founding pillars of today's European Union. Although each coin was minted by its respective country, they all shared a common design, featuring a symbolic representation of the treaty signed by the six founding states, against a background of the paving of Rome's Capitol Square, designed by Michelangelo. It was a clear message of unity, projected through millions of coins in circulation.
In addition to this historic issue, several countries also launched their own national commemorative coins. For example, Slovenia became that year the first of the new EU members (since 2004) to officially adopt the euro, and took the opportunity to issue its first commemorative coin. This event marked an important milestone in the expansion of the single currency into Central and Eastern Europe.
In the historical context, 2007 was a year of institutional strengthening with the signing of the Lisbon Treaty (although it would be ratified later), designed to improve the internal workings of the EU. The commemorative coins of that year, especially the common issue, are a tangible sign of the progress towards a shared identity, without renouncing the national histories that make each issue unique.
