2-euro Commemorative Coins 2015
In 2015, the commemorative 2-euro coins once again became carriers of a message of European unity and memory. With a new addition to the eurozone and a common issue to commemorate one of the symbols of the EU, this year left its mark on both history and collections.
2015: Lithuania joins the euro and Europe celebrates the anniversary of its flag.
The year 2015 began with a new step in the enlargement of the euro: Lithuania officially adopted the single currency on January 1, becoming the 19th country to join the eurozone. To mark this event, the Baltic country issued its first commemorative €2 coin, dedicated precisely to its accession. This reinforced the role of the euro as a tool for integration, even in a context still conditioned by the economic challenges that some countries had been facing since the last financial crisis.
In addition, that same year, the eurozone countries took part in a joint commemorative issue to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the European flag, a fundamental symbol of the continent's identity and unity. The design, chosen through a competition, showed the flag surrounded by people in the shape of stars, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and plurality that characterizes the European Union.
At the national level, countries continued to expand their already consolidated thematic series. Spain dedicated its issue to the Aqueduct of Segovia, as part of its World Heritage Sites series; Germany presented St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt as part of its Bundesländer series; and other nations such as Italy, France, Malta, Finland and Slovakia offered designs on historical events, cultural figures or religious commemorations.
2015 was a year of balance between expansion, remembrance and celebration, where commemorative coins once again demonstrated their power to tell the story of Europe from the everyday, piece by piece.
