2-euro Commemorative Coins 2016
In 2016, commemorative 2-euro coins continued to reinforce their role as a cultural and educational vehicle within the European Union. Although there was no common issue, countries took the opportunity to give prominence to key episodes in their national history and influential figures in the construction of Europe.
2016: Historical anniversaries and continuity of major national series.
The year 2016 witnessed intense activity in the European numismatic field, with a great diversity of designs and themes on commemorative €2 coins. Although there was no joint issuance as in previous years, each country took advantage of this freedom to pay tribute to national milestones and transcendental figures. Among the most prominent themes were celebrations of constitutions, independence anniversaries, literary and scientific figures, as well as monuments declared World Heritage Sites.
Spain continued its UNESCO series with the issue dedicated to the Monument of San Martín de Fromista, an example of Palencia's Romanesque architecture. Germany presented the Church of St. Michael in Hamburg as part of its Bundesländer series. Italy issued a coin in honor of Donatello, the great Renaissance sculptor, while France celebrated the centenary of the birth of François Mitterrand, former president and key figure in 20th century European politics.
At the European level, 2016 was marked by a growing debate on the future of the Union, especially following the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom. Although this event was not directly represented on commemorative coins, it did generate a climate of reflection on the direction of the European project. In this context, the 2-euro coins once again offered an image of continuity, recalling through their circulation the historical and cultural richness that continues to unite the member countries.
