The year 2020 will go down in history as a period of global crisis, but also of solidarity and adaptation. The 2 euro commemorative coins continued their course, showing that even in difficult times, memory and culture are still alive through collecting.
2020: Europe in times of pandemic and the symbolic force of its commemorative coins
In 2020, the European Union was deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected all aspects of economic and social life. Despite this, the commemorative €2 coin issuance programs continued, adapting to the new reality and fulfilling their role of preserving the history and values of each nation. Although there was no common commemorative issue, many of the coins released that year acquired a new meaning in a context where cooperation and shared identity became more necessary than ever.
Spain dedicated its issue to the Mudejar architecture of Aragon, as part of its World Heritage series; Germany issued the Brandenburg coin, depicting the Sanssouci Palace; Italy remembered Maria Montessori, an internationally recognized innovative pedagogue; and France paid tribute to Charles de Gaulle, on the 50th anniversary of his death. Other countries, such as Slovakia, Luxembourg and Malta, continued to address constitutional anniversaries, national figures and historical themes that reinforce Europe's collective memory.
In the midst of a health and economic crisis, these coins not only retained their numismatic value, but took on a deeper emotional and cultural dimension.
