2-euro Commemorative Coins 2022
The year 2022 once again united the entire Eurozone in a shared celebration: the anniversary of one of the most successful and influential programs in the history of the European Union. The commemorative €2 coins paid tribute to the spirit of exchange, youth and education that the Erasmus program represents.
2022: 35 years of the Erasmus program and the value of European youth
In 2022, the eurozone countries launched a common commemorative issue dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus program, one of the European Union's most emblematic initiatives in education, mobility and European citizenship. Since its creation in 1987, Erasmus has enabled millions of students to live academic and cultural experiences in other European countries, promoting a generation that is more open, connected and committed to the common European project.
The design of the coin, chosen by competition, combines the portrait of the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam - symbol of free thought and knowledge - with a geometric figure inspired by the number 35 and the stars of the EU, representing the union of generations through education.
In addition to this common issue, 2022 brought new national commemorative coins that continued to enrich the European numismatic landscape. Spain dedicated its coin to the Garajonay National Park, in La Gomera, within its World Heritage series; Germany presented the state of Thuringia, with the image of the Wartburg Castle; and other countries such as Italy, France, Malta, Luxembourg or Finland addressed constitutional anniversaries, historical figures and relevant cultural events.
At a time when Europe was facing new geopolitical challenges -such as the war in Ukraine-, the coin dedicated to Erasmus acquired an additional symbolic value: to reaffirm the importance of youth, education and shared values as pillars of a stronger, peaceful and united Europe.
