Coins 2 Euros of Malta Commemorative
Since joining the euro zone in 2008, Malta has used its €2 commemorative coin issues to highlight key aspects of its national identity and democratic history. The first issues began in 2011 with a series dedicated to the road to self-government, with coins depicting milestones such as the granting of the 1849 constitution or independence in 1964. This historical collection quickly became one of the most recognized in the country.
Malta has also highlighted its cultural and religious heritage in its designs, such as the series dedicated to megalithic temples, launched in 2016 with the temple of Ġgantija. In addition, in 2018, a touching coin on intergenerational solidarity, selected through a national school competition, was launched. Maltese coins, although issued in more limited quantities, are highly prized in collecting for their symbolism and strong link to Maltese identity.
