Crusader (1986-1989) Coin List

The Brazilian Cruzado was a currency that circulated in Brazil from 1986 to 1989, as part of an ambitious economic plan to combat hyperinflation. This period marked an important chapter in the country's economic history, characterized by drastic changes in monetary and fiscal policy.

Implementation and characteristics of the Cruzado

The Cruzado was introduced on February 28, 1986 as part of the Cruzado Plan, replacing the Cruzeiro at a rate of 1000:1. The new coins and banknotes featured modern and colorful designs, reflecting the hope for a new economic beginning. Coins were minted in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1, 5 and 10 cruzeiros. Banknotes were issued in denominations of 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 cruzados. A notable feature was the reintroduction of the centavo subdivision, which had disappeared due to previous inflation.

Challenges and the end of the Crusader

Despite initial optimism, the Crusader Plan and its currency faced serious challenges. The price and wage freeze, along with other economic measures, proved unsustainable in the long run. Inflation reemerged strongly in 1987, leading to the introduction of the Cruzado Novo in 1989, which eliminated three zeros from the original Cruzado. This period of monetary instability was reflected in the coins, with frequent changes in the designs and materials used for their minting. The Cruzado and its later variants are now collector's items that bear witness to a turbulent economic period in Brazil's history.
