Republic (1817-?) Coin List

The Republic of Chile began its independent history in 1817, after the victory in the Battle of Chacabuco. This period marked the beginning of a new era for the country, which was also reflected in its monetary system.

First Coins of the Republic

The first Chilean coins were minted in 1817, known as "pesos de la Patria Vieja". These pieces, made of silver, had on their obverse side an erupting volcano, symbol of freedom, and the inscription "Chile Independiente" (Independent Chile). The reverse showed a column crowned by a globe, representing the new sovereign nation. However, the production of these coins was limited due to the scarcity of resources and the political instability of the first years of independence.

Evolution of the Monetary System

As the republic consolidated, the Chilean monetary system underwent important changes. In 1834, the peso was established as the official monetary unit, replacing the Spanish real. The new coins, minted at the Santiago Mint, featured the national coat of arms on the obverse and the face value on the reverse. During this period, Chile also issued its first gold coins, known as "ounces", which circulated along with the silver coins. The economic and political stability of the mid-19th century allowed Chile to develop a more robust monetary system, which laid the foundation for its future economic growth.
