The Republic of Mozambique, established in 1975 after its independence from Portugal, has experienced a complex and fascinating monetary history. The coins of this period reflect the political, economic and social changes that the country has gone through.
Post-independence monetary transition
After independence, Mozambique replaced the Portuguese escudo with the metical as its official currency in 1980. The first issues of coins of the Republic included denominations of 50 cents, 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 meticals. These pieces featured motifs related to the revolution and national identity, such as workers, agricultural products and the country's coat of arms. The production of these coins was a challenge due to political and economic instability, which resulted in limited mintages and fluctuations in the quality of the metal used.
Monetary evolution and commemorative series
As the Republic consolidated, the coins underwent significant changes. In 1994, coinciding with the first multi-party elections, a new series of coins with modernized designs was introduced. In addition, Mozambique began issuing commemorative coins for important events, such as the 20th anniversary of independence in 1995. These pieces, often minted in precious metals, became coveted by international collectors. However, hyperinflation in the late 1980s and early 1990s led to the need to denominate coins of higher value, culminating in the introduction of the new metical in 2006, which was equivalent to 1000 old meticals.
