Historical information
The First Spanish Republic, proclaimed on February 11, 1873, marked a brief but significant period in the history of Spain. During its short existence of just 11 months, this political regime introduced important changes in various aspects of Spanish society, including the monetary system.
Historical and political context
The First Republic emerged after the abdication of King Amadeo I of Savoy, at a time of great political and social instability. The new republican government, initially led by Estanislao Figueras, faced numerous challenges, such as the Carlist wars, the cantonalist movement and tensions with the Catholic Church. Despite its short duration, the Republic attempted to implement progressive reforms, such as the separation of Church and State, the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico and the territorial reorganization of the country.
Monetary system and numismatics
In the numismatic field, the First Republic inherited the monetary system established by the Provisional Government of 1868, based on the peseta as the monetary unit. During this period, coins were minted reflecting the new republican ideals. Among the most outstanding were the 5 silver peseta coins, known as "duros", which had on their obverse side the allegory of Hispania reclining on the Pyrenees, symbolizing the new nation. On the reverse side was the coat of arms of Spain without the royal crown, surrounded by the legend"España" (Spain). In addition, 5 and 10 cent copper coins were issued, showing the lion rampant holding the national coat of arms. These coins, although limited in number due to the brevity of the regime, are today valuable numismatic testimonies of this fascinating period of Spanish history.
