Central African Republic Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in the Central African Republic is closely linked to its colonial past and its evolution as an independent nation. Since its independence in 1960, the country has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting its history and culture in the designs of its banknotes.

Current banknotes in circulation

Currently, the Central African Republic uses the Central African CFA franc as its official currency. Banknotes in circulation are issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) and come in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 CFA francs. These banknotes feature designs that reflect the cultural and natural diversity of the region, including images of local fauna, characteristic landscapes and cultural elements representative of the member countries of CEMAC (Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa).

Old banknotes and historical evolution

Before the adoption of the CFA franc, the Central African Republic used different monetary systems. During the colonial period, banknotes issued by France for its African colonies circulated. After independence, the country briefly issued its own banknotes under the name of the Central African CFA franc. These old banknotes are now prized collector's items among numismatists, as they reflect the country's transition to independence and show unique elements of Central African national identity, such as local fauna, political leaders of the time and emerging national symbols.
