Danzing Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Danzig is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From its time as a Free City to the present day, Danzig, now known as Gdańsk, has undergone several transformations in its monetary system.

Historical banknotes of the Free City of Danzig

During the period of the Free City of Danzig (1920-1939), Gulden-denominated banknotes of its own were issued. These banknotes, known as Danziger Gulden, featured elaborate designs reflecting local architecture and culture. Some of the most notable included depictions of the Danzig Town Hall and the harbor. The issuance of these banknotes ceased with the outbreak of World War II and the annexation of Danzig by Germany.

Current status and banknotes in circulation

At present, Gdańsk, as part of Poland, uses the Polish złoty as its official currency. Banknotes in circulation are issued by the National Bank of Poland and feature historical and cultural figures important to the country. Although banknotes specific to Danzig no longer exist, historic specimens from the Free City are highly valued by collectors around the world, serving as a testament to a unique period in the city's history.
