Current banknotes in circulation

Current Kuwaiti banknotes belong to the sixth series, introduced in 2014. This series includes denominations of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 1, 5, 10 and 20 dinars. Each banknote features modern designs that reflect the national identity, with images of iconic buildings, the national flag and traditional motifs. The 20 dinar bill, the largest denomination, is known to be one of the highest value banknotes in the world.

Historical banknotes and landmark notes

Prior to independence, Kuwait used the Gulf rupee. The first Kuwaiti dinar was issued in 1961, marking a milestone in the country's monetary sovereignty. Subsequent series reflected Kuwait's rapid development, with the third series in 1980 noted for its innovative security features. A significant moment was the emergency issue following the Iraqi invasion in 1990, when banknotes were printed in the UK to replace those stolen by the invading forces, demonstrating the resilience of the Kuwaiti financial system.
