The history of banknotes in Kyrgyzstan reflects the economic and political evolution of this Central Asian country. Since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan has undergone several changes in its national currency, the som, which has manifested itself in the issuance of various banknote designs over the years.

Current banknotes in circulation

Currently, the banknotes in circulation in Kyrgyzstan belong to the series issued in 2009. This series includes denominations of 20, 50, 100, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 som. Each banknote features designs that reflect Kyrgyz culture and history, with portraits of important historical figures and depictions of Kyrgyz landmarks. Old banknotes and monetary evolution

Prior to the introduction of the som in 1993, Kyrgyzstan used the Soviet ruble. The first series of som banknotes was issued in 1993 and was gradually replaced by new series in 1994 and 1997.
