Old Luxembourg banknotes

Before the introduction of the euro, Luxembourg used the Luxembourg franc as its official currency. Luxembourg franc banknotes were first issued in 1914 and continued to circulate until 2002. One of the most iconic designs was that of the Grand Duchess Charlotte, which appeared on the 100 franc banknotes from 1934 to 1980.

Although the banknotes are identical throughout the eurozone, the Luxembourg euro coins have a unique national design on the reverse, showing the portrait of the Grand Duke.
