Macao Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Macau is a fascinating journey through the economic and cultural evolution of this special administrative region of China. From its earliest issues to today's banknotes, Macau's notafilia reflects its rich heritage and unique status as an international financial center.

Current banknotes in circulation

Currently, Macau's official currency is the pataca, issued by the Macau Monetary Authority. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 patacas. These banknotes feature designs that reflect local architecture and culture, such as the Faro da Guia Lighthouse, the Temple of A-Ma and the Fortaleza do Monte. In addition, it is important to note that the Hong Kong dollar is widely accepted in Macau due to their close economic relationship.

Historical banknotes and landmarks in Macau's notability

The history of banknotes in Macau dates back to 1905, when the National Overseas Bank issued the first banknotes denominated in patacas. Throughout the 20th century, several private banks also issued banknotes, such as Tai Fung Bank and Seng Heng Bank. An important milestone was the introduction of bilingual Chinese and Portuguese banknotes in 1995, reflecting Macau's status as a Portuguese colony until its transfer to China in 1999. Since then, banknote designs have evolved to incorporate elements that celebrate Macau's unique identity as a meeting point between East and West.
