Monaco Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Monaco is unique and fascinating, reflecting the rich heritage and autonomy of the principality. Over the years, Monaco has issued its own banknotes, although it currently uses the euro as its official currency.

Current banknotes in circulation

Since January 1, 2002, Monaco officially adopted the euro as its currency. Although the principality is not a member of the European Union, it has a special agreement that allows it to use the euro and to issue its own coins with Monegasque designs. However, Monaco does not issue euro banknotes of its own, using the same ones that circulate throughout the eurozone.

Old Monaco banknotes

Prior to the adoption of the euro, Monaco used the Monegasque franc, which was on par with the French franc. Monegasque banknotes were known for their elegant and distinctive designs, often featuring images of the Prince's Palace, the coat of arms of the Grimaldi family and other important symbols of the principality. The last banknote issued before the transition to the euro was the 500 Monegasque franc note in 1988, which featured a portrait of Prince Rainier III.
