Paraguay Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Paraguay reflects the country's economic and cultural evolution. From its first issues to the present day, Paraguayan paper money has undergone numerous changes in design, denomination and security measures.
Current banknotes in circulation
The guaraní is currently the official currency of Paraguay. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 guaraníes. These banknotes feature portraits of important historical figures and Paraguayan cultural elements, such as the national flower, the Paraguayan jasmine, and the National Pantheon of Heroes.
Old banknotes and relevant facts
Before the guaraní, Paraguay used the peso as its monetary unit. An important milestone in Paraguayan notafilia was the introduction of the guaraní in 1943, replacing the peso. During the 1980s, the country experienced high inflation, which led to the issuance of higher denomination banknotes. In 2009, the 50,000 guarani bill was introduced, and in 2013, the 100,000 guarani note was introduced, reflecting the continuous adaptation of the monetary system to the country's economic needs.
