Qatar & Dubai Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Qatar and Dubai reflects the economic and cultural evolution of these two Persian Gulf emirates. Both countries have undergone significant changes in their monetary systems over time, moving from using foreign currencies to developing their own national currencies.

Qatar banknotes

Qatar introduced its own currency, the Qatari riyal, in 1966 after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. The first banknotes issued by the Qatar Monetary Agency featured designs with local motifs and values of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 riyals. In 1993, Qatar Central Bank took over responsibility for issuing banknotes, introducing a new series with improved security features. Today, banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 riyals, depicting important architectural and cultural landmarks of the country, are in circulation.

Dubai banknotes

Dubai, as part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has used the UAE dirham as its official currency since 1973. Prior to this, Dubai used the Gulf rupee and the Qatari and Dubai riyal. The first dirham banknotes were issued by the United Arab Emirates Currency Board and featured designs that reflected the culture and history of the emirates. In 1980, the UAE Central Bank took over responsibility for issuing banknotes. The current series includes denominations of 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 dirhams, with designs highlighting the UAE' s heritage and progress.
