Old banknotes of South Vietnam
During the South Vietnamese period (1955-1975), the country issued its own currency called piastra. These banknotes featured elaborate designs that included historical figures and national symbols. One of the most notable banknotes was the 500 piastres, which featured a portrait of Emperor Quang Trung. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, these banknotes were withdrawn from circulation and replaced by the currency of unified Vietnam.
Current banknotes of Vietnam
Today, the official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Current banknotes feature the portrait of Ho Chi Minh on the obverse and various landmarks of the country on the reverse. A unique feature of these banknotes is that they are made of polymer, which makes them more durable and difficult to counterfeit. The most recent series, introduced in 2003, includes denominations ranging from 500 to 500,000 dong, reflecting Vietnam' s economic evolution in recent decades.
