The history of banknotes in Spain is a fascinating journey through the country's economic and cultural evolution. From the first issues to the current euros, Spanish banknotes have reflected the political, social and artistic changes of each era.
Current banknotes in circulation
Since 2002, Spain has used the euro as its official currency. The euro banknotes, designed by Robert Kalina, feature European architectural motifs in their different denominations: 5€, 10€, 20€, 50€, 100€, 200€ and 500€. These banknotes are legal tender in all Eurozone countries and feature advanced security measures to prevent counterfeiting.
Historical Spanish banknotes
Before the euro, the peseta was the official currency of Spain from 1868 to 2002. During this period, numerous banknote designs were issued, most notably the 1992 series with portraits of historical figures such as Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro. Other notable banknotes include the 1928 series with the portrait of King Alfonso XIII and the 1938 issue during the Spanish Civil War, which reflected the division of the country with different designs for each side.
