Current banknotes in circulation
The current Taiwanese banknotes belong to the series issued in 1999, known as the "Taiwan New Dollar Series". This series includes denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 Taiwan dollars. Each bill features important historical figures and landmarks of Taiwan, such as Dr. Sun Yat-sen on the $100 bill and Jade Mountain on the $1,000 note.
Old banknotes and milestones in Taiwanese notability.
Taiwan' s first modern banknotes were issued in 1946, following the Japanese surrender in World War II. During the Kuomintang government era, the "Old Taiwan Dollar" was introduced in 1949. A significant milestone was the currency reform of 1949, which established the New Taiwan Dollar as the official currency, with an exchange rate of 40,000 old dollars for each new dollar. This reform marked the beginning of a new era in Taiwan's monetary history.
