Tonga Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Tonga reflects the rich culture and tradition of the Kingdom of Tonga, the only country in Oceania that was never colonized. The Tongan pa'anga, the country's official currency, has undergone several changes over the years, from its first issues to the current banknotes in circulation.
Current banknotes in circulation
The current Tongan banknotes are characterized by their colorful design and their representation of the local culture. The most recent series, introduced in 2009, includes denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 pa'anga. These banknotes feature portraits of King Tupou VI on the obverse, while the reverse shows iconic Tongan scenes, such as the Royal Palace, the Ha'amonga 'a Maui stone and various depictions of Tongan life and traditions.
Early banknotes and milestones in Tongan notafilia.
The first Tongan banknotes were issued in 1921 under the reign of Queen Salote Tupou III. These early banknotes, denominated in pounds and shillings, were replaced in 1967 by the pa'anga. An important milestone in Tongan notafilia occurred in 1974, when a commemorative series was issued to celebrate the centenary of the Tongan Constitution. Another notable issue was in 1995, commemorating the 75th birthday of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV with a 1 pa'anga polymer bill, making it one of the first Pacific countries to adopt this technology.
