Current banknotes in circulation
Turkmenistan's current banknotes were introduced in 2009 as part of a currency reform. This series includes denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 manat. The designs feature portraits of Turkmen historical figures and national monuments, such as the Presidential Palace in Ashgabat. In 2014, a 2 manat bill was added to commemorate the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Old banknotes and relevant facts.
Turkmenistan' s first banknotes were issued in 1993, shortly after independence. These notes, denominated in manat, replaced the Soviet ruble. In 2009, Turkmenistan undertook a major currency redenomination, introducing the "new manat" at a rate of 5000 old manat to 1 new manat. This change marked a significant milestone in the country's economic history, simplifying transactions and reflecting the economic stability achieved after years of independence.
