Current banknotes in circulation
Uganda currently uses the Ugandan shilling as its official currency. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 shillings. These bills feature colorful designs highlighting Ugandan fauna, flora and culture, such as the mountain gorilla on the 50,000 shilling bill and the independence monument on the 10,000 shilling note.
Old banknotes and relevant facts
Prior to the introduction of the Ugandan shilling in 1966, Uganda used the East African shilling. An important milestone in Ugandan notafilia was the issuance of banknotes during Idi Amin's regime in the 1970s, which included high denominations due to hyperinflation. In 1987, a new series of banknotes was introduced following a currency reform, ushering in an era of greater economic stability. Since then, Uganda has made several updates to its banknotes to improve security features and reflect national identity.
