The history of banknotes in Vietnam reflects the country's political and economic changes over time. From colonial times to the present day, Vietnamese paper money has undergone various transformations, adapting to the needs of each historical period.

Current banknotes in circulation

The Vietnamese đồng has been the official currency of Vietnam since 1978. The current banknotes belong to the series introduced in 2003, with denominations ranging from 500 đồng to 500,000 đồng. These banknotes feature images of President Ho Chi Minh on the obverse and various cultural and historical motifs on the reverse, such as the Temple of Literature in Hanoi or Ha Long Bay.

Historical banknotes of Vietnam

During the colonial era, piasters from French Indochina circulated. After independence, the country was divided and each part issued its own currency. North Vietnam used the đồng of the National Bank, while South Vietnam circulated the Saigon đồng. An important milestone in Vietnamese notafilia was the monetary unification in 1978, following the country's reunification, when the current đồng was introduced as the single currency for all of Vietnam.
