Angola Coins
The official currency of Angola is the kwanza, introduced in 1977 after the country's independence. Angolan numismatics reflect the rich history and economic changes that this African nation has experienced over the years.
Current currency and its history
The Angolan kwanza (AOA) has been the currency in circulation since 1999, after several previous denominations. Prior to its introduction, Angola used the Angolan escudo during the Portuguese colonial era and underwent several currency reforms due to hyperinflation. The current kwanza is divided into 100 cents and is issued in banknotes from 5 to 2000 kwanzas, as well as coins from 1 to 20 kwanzas.
Numismatic milestones
Among the highlights in Angolan numismatics is the issuance of commemorative coins, such as the series dedicated to the 25th anniversary of independence in 2000. In addition, in 2012, Angola introduced a new family of banknotes with modernized designs and enhanced security features. An interesting aspect is the coexistence of the kwanza with the US dollar in many transactions, reflecting the country's complex economic reality.
