Salta Coin List

The monetary history of Salta, a province in northwestern Argentina, reflects the political and economic changes in the region from colonial times to the present. Coins minted and used in Salta over time offer a fascinating perspective on its development as an integral part of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and, later, of the Argentine Republic.

Colonial times and first local issues

During the colonial period, Salta depended mainly on the Spanish coins that circulated throughout the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. However, after the May Revolution of 1810 and the subsequent war of independence, the shortage of circulating currency led to the need for local issues. In 1815, Salta issued its first provisional coins, known as "cuartillos", which were minted in copper and had a value of a quarter of a real. These pieces, although rudimentary, represented an important step towards the province's monetary autonomy and reflected the growing regional identity in the context of the struggle for independence.

Monetary consolidation and provincial issues

As the 19th century progressed, Salta continued to issue its own coins, adapting to changing political and economic circumstances. In 1821, under the government of Martín Miguel de Güemes, silver coins known as "pesetas" were minted, bearing the coat of arms of the province and symbolizing Salta's autonomy. Later, during the time of the Argentine Confederation, Salta participated in the federal monetary system, although it maintained a certain independence in its issues. The province also experimented with the issuance of paper money, especially during periods of economic crisis. These various monetary issues not only fulfilled a vital economic function, but also served as symbols of Salta's identity and history, reflecting in their designs local heroes, native flora and fauna, and historical landmarks of the region.
