Peso (1992-?) Coin List
The Argentine peso introduced in 1992 was a milestone in the country's monetary history. This new currency replaced the austral and sought to stabilize the economy after years of hyperinflation. The monetary system was based on parity with the U.S. dollar, known as "convertibility".
Characteristics of the convertible peso coins
Convertible peso coins were minted in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 25 and 50 cents, as well as 1 peso. The series featured designs that honored Argentine history and culture. The 1 centavo coins showed the National Coat of Arms, while the 5 centavo coins featured the ceibo flower, the national emblem. The 10 and 25 centavo coins showed the Cabildo of Buenos Aires and the House of Tucumán, respectively, both iconic buildings of the independence. The 50 centavos coin featured the Sun of May, and the 1 peso coin showed the portrait of a different Argentine hero each year.
Impact and evolution of the convertible peso
The convertible peso initially achieved its objective of stabilizing the economy and controlling inflation. Parity with the dollar was maintained for a decade, allowing Argentines to save in their own currency with confidence. However, the 2001 economic crisis put an end to convertibility. Despite this, coins minted during this period remained in circulation for many more years, gradually being replaced by new designs in the following decades. The convertible peso coin series represents a crucial period in Argentina's economic history and is highly valued by collectors as a testament to an era of monetary stability.
