Azerbaijan Coins
The official currency of Azerbaijan is the Azerbaijani manat, introduced in 1992 following the country's independence. Throughout its history, Azerbaijan has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting the political and economic transformations in the region.
Current currency in circulation
The modern Azerbaijani manat is divided into 100 qəpik. There are banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100 and 200 manat, and coins of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 qəpik. In 2006, a redenomination of the manat was carried out, where 5000 old manats were equivalent to 1 new manat, with the aim of stabilizing the economy and combating inflation.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Before independence, Azerbaijan used the Soviet ruble. During the short period of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920), the first national banknotes were issued. An important milestone in Azerbaijani numismatics was the minting of commemorative coins starting in 1996, celebrating historical and cultural events of the country. In addition, in 2011, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan issued a 100 manat gold coin, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the country's independence.
