Barbados Coins
The official currency of Barbados is the Barbadian dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. This monetary system has a rich history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the economic and political evolution of the Caribbean island.
Current currency in circulation
The Barbadian dollar was introduced in 1973, replacing the British West Indies dollar. Current coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents, as well as 1 dollar. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars. The Central Bank of Barbados is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the national currency.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the introduction of the Barbadian dollar, the island used a variety of currencies, including the Spanish real and the British pound sterling. An important milestone in Barbadian numismatics was the minting of the first local coins in 1788, known as the "black penny". In 2016, Barbados issued a commemorative $1 coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its independence, highlighting the importance of numismatics in preserving national history and culture.
