Belgium - Belgian Franc Coins

Numismatics in Belgium has a rich history that reflects the political and economic changes in the country. Currently, Belgium uses the euro as its official currency, having been part of the Eurozone since its introduction in 2002. However, its monetary history is much more extensive and fascinating.

The Belgian franc: predecessor of the euro

Before the adoption of the euro, Belgium's official currency was the Belgian franc. Introduced in 1832, shortly after the country's independence, the Belgian franc was the national currency for more than 170 years. During this period, numerous series of coins and banknotes were issued, including commemorative issues celebrating historical events and important figures in Belgian culture.

Belgian numismatic milestones

Belgium has been home to several significant numismatic milestones. In 1865, the country was a founding member of the Latin Monetary Union, an early attempt at monetary unification in Europe. In addition, the Royal Belgian Mint, established in 1832, has been responsible for the minting of high-quality coins, including special series such as the 5 ECU silver coins, a precursor to the euro, issued in the 1980s.
