Royal Crossing (1993-1994) Coin List
The Cruceiro Real was the official currency of Brazil for a brief period, from August 1, 1993 to June 30, 1994. This monetary unit was introduced as part of an economic plan to combat the hyperinflation affecting the country at the time.
Historical and economic context
Brazil was facing a severe economic crisis in the early 1990s, with inflation rates reaching over 2000% per year. The government of President Itamar Franco implemented the Real Plan, a series of economic measures designed to stabilize the economy. As part of this plan, the Cruceiro Real was introduced as a transitional currency between the old Cruceiro and the future Brazilian Real. During this period, the Brazilian economy underwent significant changes, including trade liberalization, privatizations and tax reform.
Cruceiro Real Coins
Cruceiro Real coins were minted in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 50 and 100 cruceiros reais. These pieces were characterized by their simple and functional design, reflecting the temporary nature of the coin. On the obverse, they generally presented the face value and the year of minting, while the reverse showed the Brazilian coat of arms. Due to the rapid devaluation of the currency, the lower denominations quickly lost their practical usefulness. Despite their short life, these coins are now valuable collector's items for numismatists, as they represent a unique period in Brazil's economic history and mark the transition to monetary stability that the country would achieve with the introduction of the Real.
