Cochinchina Coin List

The numismatic history of Cochinchina is a fascinating journey through the monetary evolution of this Southeast Asian region. From its earliest mintages to the adoption of modern coins, Cochinchina has undergone several changes in its monetary system that reflect its rich history and the cultural influences it has received over time.

Monetary evolution in Cochinchina

The first coins used in Cochinchina were sapecas of Chinese origin, introduced during the period of Chinese domination. Later, with the arrival of the French colonizers in the 19th century, the Indochinese franc was implemented as the official currency. This new currency coexisted with the traditional currencies for some time, until it was finally established as the only legal tender in the region.

Relevant historical milestones

One of the most significant events in Cochinchina's numismatic history was the creation of the Bank of Indochina in 1875, which was responsible for the issuance of banknotes and coins for all of French Indochina. Another important milestone was the introduction of the piastra de commerce in 1885, a silver coin that became the main monetary unit in the region and facilitated international trade. After Vietnam's independence, the piastra was replaced by the Vietnamese dong in 1953, marking the end of the colonial monetary era in Cochinchina.
