The recent monetary history of the Eastern Caribbean States is marked by the transition from colonial currencies to a unified currency for the region. This significant change has influenced the numismatics and economics of the islands that make up this monetary union.

The Eastern Caribbean dollar

In 1965, the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) was introduced as the official currency of the Eastern Caribbean States. This currency replaced the British West Indies dollar and became the medium of exchange for Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and later Anguilla and Montserrat. The Eastern Caribbean dollar has maintained a fixed exchange rate with the U.S. dollar since 1976, which has provided economic stability to the region.

Numismatics and commemorative issues

The numismatics of the Eastern Caribbean States has been enriched by the issuance of commemorative coins and banknotes over the years. Of particular note are the series of coins celebrating the independence of member nations, as well as issues commemorating historical events and important figures in the region. In 2008, a new series of coins was introduced with updated designs, including depictions of local flora and fauna, which has increased collector interest in Eastern Caribbean numismatics.

Eastern Caribbean States is a country that does not exist today.
