Faroe Islands Coin List

The Faroe Islands, an autonomous archipelago belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark, have a fascinating numismatic history that reflects their political and economic evolution over the centuries. From its earliest Viking settlements to the present day, the Faroes have undergone several changes in their monetary system, adapting to the influences of the dominant powers and developing their own monetary identity.

Early monetary history

During the Middle Ages, the Faroes mainly used Norwegian and Danish coins, due to their close relationship with these kingdoms. In the 16th century, with the union of Denmark and Norway, the Danish krone became the official currency of the archipelago. However, the shortage of cash led the Faroese to use alternative methods of exchange, such as barter and the use of local products as a means of payment.

Modern monetary development

The 20th century marked a turning point in the numismatic history of the Faroes. During World War II, the archipelago was isolated from Denmark and issued its first own banknotes in 1940, denominated in Faroese kroner. After the war, the Danish krone was reintroduced, but in 1974, with the achievement of greater autonomy, the Faroes began to issue their own banknotes and coins, maintaining parity with the Danish krone. Since then, the Faroe Islands have developed a unique numismatic identity, with designs that reflect their culture and natural heritage.
