The Central Bank of The Gambia is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the currency, maintaining its stability in the international market.

Prior to the dalasi, The Gambia used the Gambian pound, which was in circulation from 1964 to 1971. A notable fact in Gambian numismatics is the issuance of commemorative coins, such as the series of silver coins launched in 1977 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Elizabeth II. In addition, in 2014, The Gambia introduced a new series of banknotes with enhanced security features and designs reflecting the country's culture and wildlife.
