Colonial Period (1524-1823) Coin List

The Colonial Period in Guatemala, which lasted from 1524 to 1823, was a period of profound political, economic and social change. During these three centuries, the region underwent a radical transformation under Spanish rule, which included the introduction of a new monetary system.

Establishment of the colonial monetary system

After the conquest, the Spanish implemented a monetary system based on the silver peso, also known as the "real de a ocho". This system gradually replaced pre-Columbian methods of exchange, such as barter and the use of cocoa beans as currency. The Guatemalan Mint, established in 1733, began minting coins locally, which facilitated trade and tax collection. The first Guatemalan coins bore the Spanish coat of arms and the effigy of the reigning monarch, reflecting colonial authority over the region.

Evolution and impact of colonial currency

Throughout the colonial period, Guatemalan currency underwent several modifications in design and value. The introduction of the "macaco", a low grade silver coin minted in the 18th century, was particularly significant for local trade. These coins, along with higher denomination pieces, facilitated the economic development of the Captaincy General of Guatemala. The colonial monetary system not only impacted the economy, but also influenced social structures, creating new forms of wealth and power. By the end of the colonial period, Guatemalan currency had evolved to reflect both Spanish influence and regional particularities, laying the foundation for the future monetary system of independent Guatemala.
