After the fall of the Miklós Horthy regime, Hungary found itself in a complex post-war situation. The country was under Soviet occupation and faced a severe economic crisis. However, growing communist influence, backed by the Soviet presence, began to undermine these efforts, culminating in the Communist Party's seizure of power in 1948.
