Second Republic (1946-1948) Coin List
Hungary 's Second Republic, established in 1946 after World War II, marked a brief but significant period in the country's history. During these years, Hungary underwent political and economic changes that were reflected in its monetary system.
Historical and political context
After the fall of the Miklós Horthy regime, Hungary found itself in a complex post-war situation. The country was under Soviet occupation and faced a severe economic crisis. The ruling coalition, led by the Smallholders' Party, attempted to implement democratic and economic reforms. However, growing communist influence, backed by the Soviet presence, began to undermine these efforts, culminating in the Communist Party's seizure of power in 1948.
Monetary system and numismatics
The monetary system of the Second Republic reflected the economic turbulence of the period. Postwar hyperinflation led to the introduction of the forint in August 1946, replacing the pengő. The first forint coins, minted between 1946 and 1948, included denominations of 2, 10, 20 fillér and 1, 2, 5 forint. These pieces featured designs symbolizing reconstruction and labor, such as ears of wheat and figures of workers. The mintage quality was modest, reflecting the economic limitations of the time. Despite their short duration, these coins are important numismatic testimonies of a transitional period in Hungarian history, prior to the establishment of the communist regime.
