Alfonso XII (1874-1885) Coin List
The reign of Alfonso XII, which lasted from 1874 to 1885, marked a period of stability and modernization in Spain. Known as "The Peacemaker", Alfonso XII ascended to the throne after the turbulent Democratic Sexenio, inaugurating the Bourbon Restoration. During his reign, important economic reforms were implemented and coins were minted to reflect the nation's new era.
Economic and political reforms
Under the leadership of Alfonso XII, Spain experienced a period of relative peace and progress. The political system of turnism, established by Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, alternated power between conservatives and liberals, providing stability. This stability allowed for important economic advances, including the expansion of the railroads, the development of industry and the modernization of agriculture. The Bank of Spain became the sole issuer of national currency in 1874, centralizing and standardizing the Spanish monetary system.
Numismatics of the reign of Alfonso XII
Coins minted during the reign of Alfonso XII reflect the transition to a modern monetary system. The peseta system, which had been established in 1868 but was consolidated during this period, was introduced. The most common coins included 5 and 10 cent pieces in bronze, 50 cents and 1 peseta in silver, and 25 pesetas in gold. The obverse of these coins typically showed the profile of King Alfonso XII, while the reverse featured the coat of arms of Spain. The quality and consistency of these coins marked a significant advance in Spanish numismatics, laying the foundations for the monetary system that would last until the introduction of the euro.
