Franco Spanish State (1939-1975) Coin List

The period known as the Spanish State in Spain, which lasted from 1939 to 1975, was a time of great political, economic and social changes. During these years, coins reflected the evolution of the Franco regime and its monetary policies, becoming silent witnesses of the country's history.

The first issues of the Spanish State

After the Civil War, the new regime was faced with the need to establish its own monetary system. In 1940 the first Spanish State pesetas were minted, with Franco's face on the obverse and the national coat of arms on the reverse. These coins, manufactured in cupronickel due to the scarcity of precious metals, symbolized the consolidation of the Caudillo's power. Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, several series were issued, ranging from 5 cents to 5 pesetas, all of them characterized by their austere design and the omnipresent effigy of Franco.

Monetary evolution during developmentalism

From the 1960s onwards, coinciding with the period of economic opening and the so-called "Spanish miracle", coins underwent significant changes in their design and composition. New alloys such as aluminum and nickel were introduced, and higher values were issued, such as the 100 silver peseta coin in 1966. Designs were modernized, incorporating motifs that reflected economic progress and national identity, such as the Iberian horseman on the 5 and 50 peseta coins. The last series of Spanish State pesetas, minted in 1975, marked the end of an era and the beginning of the transition to democracy, leaving a numismatic legacy that today is an object of study and collecting.
