India Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in India is fascinating and reflects the country's rich cultural and economic heritage. From colonial times to the present day, Indian banknotes have undergone numerous changes in design, denomination and security features.
Current banknotes in circulation
Current Indian rupee banknotes belong to the Mahatma Gandhi series, introduced in 1996. These denominations include 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2000 rupees. Each banknote features a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on the obverse and various cultural and historical motifs on the reverse. In 2016, a major demonetization took place that removed the old 500 and 1000 rupee bills, replacing them with new designs and adding the 2000 rupee denomination.
Old banknotes and notable landmarks.
The first banknotes in India were issued by the Bank of Bengal in 1861. During the colonial period, the banknotes featured portraits of British monarchs. After independence in 1947, India began issuing its own banknotes with the Ashoka emblem. An important milestone was the introduction of the landscape series of banknotes in 1969, which highlighted the country's geographical diversity. In 1987, the Mahatma Gandhi centenary commemorative series was launched, a precursor to the current series.
