Provisional Government (1868-1871) Coin List
The Provisional Government of Spain, which lasted from 1868 to 1871, was a crucial transitional period in Spanish history. During these years, important political and economic changes were implemented, including a significant monetary reform that left a lasting imprint on Spanish numismatics.
Historical and political context
The Provisional Government emerged after the Glorious Revolution of 1868, which overthrew Queen Isabella II. This period was characterized by the search for a new state model and the drafting of the 1869 Constitution, which established a parliamentary monarchy. Political instability and debates about the future of Spain marked these years, while searching for a new monarch and facing challenges such as the Cuban insurrection and tensions with the Carlists.
Monetary and numismatic reform
One of the most outstanding actions of the Provisional Government was the monetary reform of 1868. This reform introduced the peseta as the official monetary unit, replacing the escudo. New coins were issued with innovative designs, such as the famous "Hispania" on silver coins and the national coat of arms on gold coins. Denominations included pieces of 1, 2, 5 and 10 cents in bronze, 50 cents, 1, 2 and 5 pesetas in silver, and 25 pesetas in gold. These coins, known as "coins of the Provisional Government", are highly valued by collectors due to their historical importance and the quality of their minting, mainly done at the Madrid Mint.
