Victor Manuel II (1861-1878) Coin List
Victor Emmanuel II was the first king of unified Italy, reigning from 1861 until his death in 1878. During his reign, important political and economic changes took place in the country, including monetary unification and the minting of new coins that reflected the Italian national identity.
Monetary unification and new coinage
Following the unification of Italy in 1861, it became necessary to create a unified monetary system to replace the various currencies circulating in the former Italian states. In 1862, the Italian lira was introduced as the official currency of the Kingdom of Italy. The first coins of Victor Emmanuel II as King of Italy featured his effigy and the inscription "Vittorio Emanuele II" on the obverse, while the reverse showed the coat of arms of the House of Savoy. Coins were minted in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 lire in gold and silver, as well as coins of lesser value in copper and bronze.
Design evolution and historical significance
Throughout the reign of Victor Emmanuel II, coin designs underwent some modifications reflecting the political changes and national aspirations of unified Italy. In 1863, a new series of coins was introduced with an updated design, which included the legend "Re d'Italia" (King of Italy) in place of the old regional titles. These coins are particularly significant to collectors and historians, as they represent Italy's transition from a collection of fragmented states to a unified nation. In addition, commemorative coins were struck during this period to celebrate important events, such as the annexation of Venice in 1866 and the capture of Rome in 1870, which completed the territorial unification of Italy under the reign of Victor Emmanuel II.
