Umberto I (1878-1900) Coin List

The reign of Umberto I in Italy, from 1878 to 1900, was a period of important political and economic changes that were reflected in the country's numismatics. During these two decades, Italy underwent a significant transformation that was reflected in the coins minted under the monarch's rule.

Historical and political context

Umberto I ascended to the throne at a time of consolidation of the Italian state after unification. His reign was marked by colonial expansion, the strengthening of the Triple Alliance and internal challenges such as increasing social inequality. The monetary policy of the time reflected these changes, with the adoption of the gold standard in 1883 and the issuance of new coins symbolizing national unity. The effigies of Umberto I on the coins depicted him as a strong and modern monarch, in keeping with the image Italy wanted to project internationally.

Coins from the reign of Umberto I

During this period, a number of coins were minted that are of great interest to numismatists. Among the most notable are the 20 gold lire, which showed the bust of the king on the obverse and the coat of arms of the House of Savoy on the reverse. Also notable are the 5 silver lire, known as "scudo", which featured a similar design. In smaller denominations, 2 lira, 1 lira, 50 centimes and 20 centimes coins were issued in silver, as well as 10 centimes, 5 centimes and 1 centime pieces in copper. These coins not only served as a medium of exchange, but also reflected the artistic and technological evolution of Italian coinage in the late 19th century, with more refined designs and more advanced production techniques.
