1 dollar (Sacagawea Dollar)
The Sacagawea coin, also known as the Golden Dollar, is a coin issued by the United States that celebrates the historical figure of Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who played a crucial role in the Lewis and Clark expedition. This coin was introduced in 2000 as part of an effort to revitalize the use of one-dollar coins in circulation.
The issuance of this coin was authorized by the U.S. Congress under the Dollar Coin Act of 1997, with the goal of introducing a new one-dollar coin to replace the Susan B. Anthony dollar, which had limited acceptance among the public.
Design
Obverse: The coin features a portrait of Sacagawea, an important historical figure, with his son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau on his back. This design, created by sculptor Glenna Goodacre, was selected for its compassionate and maternal depiction of Sacagawea, reflecting his crucial role in the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Reverse: Originally, the reverse of the coin depicts an eagle in flight, a symbol of freedom and strength. This design was done by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. and is accompanied by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the face value "ONE DOLLAR".
What do the letters next to the year mean?
The letters next to the year on a coin indicate the mint (Mint) where the coin was struck. Each country has multiple mints and each is represented by a specific letter.
Some common examples are:
- D: Denver
- S: San Francisco
- P: Philadelphia (since 1980s, prior to this no letter was placed for coins minted in Philadelphia).
What is the error on the Sacagawea coin?
In the case of the Sacagawea coin, while there are no widely recognized errors (those that exist are highly valued), there are some interesting variants, such as proof issues, coins in special finishes, and reverse design variations starting in 2009 as part of the Native American $1 Coin Program. These variants may be sought after by collectors because of their rarity or uniqueness, but they do not constitute errors in the traditional numismatic sense of the term.
