Euro (1999-?) Coin List
The introduction of the euro in Belgium in 1999 marked an important milestone in the country's monetary history. Although physical coins and banknotes did not come into circulation until 2002, the euro became the official currency of Belgium as of January 1, 1999, replacing the Belgian franc. This change brought with it a number of challenges and opportunities for the Belgian economy and its monetary system.
The euro changeover and its impact on the Belgian economy
The adoption of the euro in Belgium was part of a broader process of European economic integration. The fixed exchange rate between the Belgian franc and the euro was set at 40.3399 francs per euro. During the transition period from 1999 to 2002, the euro was used for electronic transactions and accounting, while the Belgian franc remained the legal tender for cash. This period allowed businesses and citizens to gradually adapt to the new currency. The introduction of the euro brought benefits such as the elimination of currency exchange costs within the eurozone and greater currency stability. However, it also brought challenges, such as the need to adjust IT systems and public perception of prices in the new currency.
Belgian euro coins: design and features
Belgian euro coins feature a unique design that reflects the country's national identity. All Belgian coins show the effigy of King Albert II on the obverse, surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union. On the reverse, the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins feature the royal monogram of Albert II. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins show the effigy of King Albert II. The 1 and 2 euro coins feature a portrait of the King along with his monogram. A distinctive feature of Belgian coins is the inclusion of the letters "BE" to identify Belgium as the issuing country. In addition, the €2 coins have an edge inscription reading "2 ★★★", repeated six times alternating right up and left down. The production of these coins is carried out at the Royal Belgian Mint, maintaining high standards of quality and security in their manufacture.
