Euro (2014-?) Coin List

Andorra's adoption of the euro in 2014 marked an important milestone in the monetary history of the small Pyrenean principality. After years of negotiations with the European Union, Andorra was finally able to mint and issue its own euro coins, thus joining the select group of countries using the common European currency.

The process of adopting the euro

Andorra, which previously used the French franc and Spanish peseta as legal tender, began its transition to the euro in 1999 when these currencies were replaced by the new European currency. However, it was not until June 30, 2011 that the monetary agreement between Andorra and the European Union was signed, allowing the principality to issue its own euro coins. On January 1, 2014, Andorra officially began minting and circulating its euro coins, thus completing its integration into the euro zone. This process required major adaptations to the country's financial and economic system, as well as the creation of a legal and regulatory framework in line with European standards.

Andorran euro coins

Andorran euro coins feature unique designs that reflect the identity and culture of the principality. The obverse of the 1 and 2 euro coins features the Casa de la Vall, the historic seat of the General Council of Andorra, while the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins depict the Romanesque church of Santa Coloma. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins show a Pyrenean chamois and an eagle. All coins include the twelve stars of the European Union and the inscription "Andorra". Production of these coins is relatively low compared to other Eurozone countries, which makes them especially attractive to collectors. In addition, Andorra regularly issues commemorative 2 euro coins, commemorating historical events or important figures of the principality, further increasing numismatic interest in Andorran issues.
