Italy Coins

Italian numismatics is rich in history and diversity. From ancient times to the present day, Italy has witnessed numerous changes in its monetary system, reflecting the country's political and economic transformations.

The euro: Italy's current currency

Since 2002, Italy has used the euro as its official currency. Italian euro coins feature unique designs on their national side, including famous works of art such as Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man on the 1 euro coin. The adoption of the euro marked the end of the Italian lira, which had been the country's currency for more than 140 years.

The Italian lira: a historical legacy

Prior to the euro, the Italian lira was the official currency of Italy from 1861 to 2002. During its existence, the lira underwent several significant changes, including the introduction of nickel coins in 1908 and the issuance of emergency bills during World War II. An important milestone in Italian numismatics was the minting of the 500 silver lira coin in 1958, commemorating the centenary of Italian unification.
